echomignonnette replied to your post: Do you think videogames have a desensitization towards violence effect on children or people in general?

Dude, no. This is too simplistic of an analysis for the situation which is behind a basic logical structure. And the sensitive to experience part is off, violent porn and abuse, there are studies. Also if you want to take me up on this message me.

There exists studies, therefore causation has been discovered…?

If that is your logic, then no thanks to taking you up on it. If you had the proper citation of the methodologies involved in the studies, then perhaps I would peruse over them. I am trying to finish my final philosophy of mind paper, so this is all I will say…

You are right, it is too simplistic, just like it is too simplistic to attribute video game usage as a cause of what is abstractly called a perceived desensitivity to violence. Which was my point.

“This is too simplistic of an analysis for the situation which is behind a basic logical structure”

No, I never used logical structures. I used metaphysical assumptions of causation.

I would argee that abuse is a cause of individuals being desensitized to violence, like I said, real violence can cause such a thing.

As far as “violent porn”…

I already covered that:

Pornography, Philosophy Kings, and the Myth of Finding Causation

“In her reading of Merleau-Ponty, Irigaray warns against any exploration of invisibility as the perceivable event beyond recognition risking, in a phallic specular mechanisation, “wanting to appropriate the invisible.”[21] For each image, each frame and flicker the spectatorial self adapts to the specificity and molecular intensity of the image, and we are neither independent from nor dependent on its content to register meaning and/as pleasure. The image, like mucous itself, is not a visible plane but a sticky blurred envelopment, and each inflection of the envelope opening out and folding in creates a new plane of relation of spectatorial pleasure. We are not differentiated from image or screen. Thus we can no longer know what parts are us, what parts the image and hence we no longer know who we are or what it represents or reflects in a scopto-phallic regime. We see the image through a mucosal filter, seeing in a mucosal way that refuses demarcation and apprehension and most importantly, relation through opposition, “a look that is too close to make use of a certain perspective, of discrimination, distance or mastery.” [22] Mucosal spectatorship, the angelic image, the screen as passage, offer an ethics of difference which exploits the pleasures of cinema art as they allow us to succumb and gift ourselves to the experience of the image without sight and the self without subject.”

Rough (!) translation:

“In horror movies, one of the standard procedures for effective nightmare scenarios is one where the alien is inside oneself. This idea that inside your body there is a wormlike or other formless creature which dominates you and later the horrible, nightmarish moment when this thing is forced to come out.

The video clip “Paranoid Android” is crucial for me because of its cartoon form. The horror lies in the idea that this “undead universe” of cartoons is transposed into real life. The nightmare occurs I think when a living being, which is dead symbolically, doesn’t fit in our reality. There is a precise english term for being neither dead or alive - the nightmare is the domain of the “living dead”. The ultimate paradox.

The true lesson of nightmares is therefore that we are not scared mainly of death like some philosophers will let you believe, but it is this “radical obscene immortality.”

When someone says “immortal” one always thinks of christian blessings (etc.) of immortality…but no, immortality is something horrible…it is something that occurs in Stephen King novels…

What I want to emphasize here is how narrow the line is between nightmare and comedy. Doesn’t the same happen in Tom & Jerry? You know, when the cat is….sliced, overrun by a bulldozer… and in the next installment the game starts again.”

[Video Link] Brendon Grimshaw lives alone (with some giant turtles) on the island of Moyenne in the Indian Ocean. The spry gent reminds me of Tom Neale, who wrote a book I love called an Island to Oneself.

Brendon Grimshaw purchased the island for £8,000 in 1962 and set about making the island habitable. He did this with the help of one other man, Rene Antoine Lafortune….

Grimshaw and his friend planted sixteen-thousand trees, built 4.8 kilometers of nature paths, and brought and bred giant land tortoises, creating an island of incredible beauty now worth 34 million Euros. Apart from a wide variety of plant and bird life, the island is home to over 100 land tortoises….

After 20 years of persistence, Grimshaw and his assistant achieved their goal of making Moyenne Island a National Park in its own right, separate to that of the St. Anne marine park. Now known as the Moyenne Island National Park, it is the smallest national park in the world, harbouring more species per square foot than any other part of the world.

Reduce your expectations, and your rights follow suit. It is up to us, the public, to make sure that our expectations of privacy are not unreasonably eroded. I don’t mind people being happy - but the idea that everything we do is part of the pursuit of happiness seems to me a really dangerous idea and has led to a contemporary disease in Western society, which is fear of sadness. Wholeness is what we ought to be striving for and part of that is sadness, disappointment, frustration, failure; all of those things which make us who we are. Happiness and victory and fulfillment are nice little things that also happen to us, but they don’t teach us much. Everyone says we grow through pain and then as soon as they experience pain they say “Quick! Move on! Cheer up!” I’d like just for a year to have a moratorium on the word “happiness” and to replace it with the word “wholeness”. Ask yourself “is this contributing to my wholeness?” and if you’re having a bad day, it is.”

- Hugh Mackay (via internal-acceptance-movement)

"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”

- Leonardo da Vinci (via thelibraryoflife)

nakedeye:
