The trials and tribulations of an Epicurean Melancholic.

Unsurprisingly amazing writing.

Back in the 1980s, conservatism was a thrilling empirical, reality-based challenge to overweening government power and omniscient liberal utopianism. Today, alas, it has become a victim of its own success, reliving past glories rather than…

I don’t think the drug war counts as actual warfare. It’s a term to get across the serious nature of prevention efforts. It’s also a policy that crosses over both aisles of the congress.

I mean, 15,000 deaths sounds like a war to me. Not to mention the amount of money we’re putting in to imprison nonviolent criminals, otherwise known as prisoners of an unjust war.

Its not accurate at all to blame the deaths that are caused by dealers and criminals on those who imprison and ban the sale of drugs.  Thats the most ridiculously flawed logic I’ve heard.  I agree we shouldnt be putting in prison so many non-violent criminals but I am not in agreement that all drugs should be legalized.  Thats like blaming the drug companies for the deaths of people who abuse their products.

Whose fault is it that people in the inner city die because of drugs?  THOSE WHO ARE INVOLVED IN THE DRUG TRADE.  Not the people trying to prevent them from doing so.  Do our methods and laws need revising?  CERTAINLY…but DO NOT blame all of those deaths on the good people trying to protect people from the effects of drugs.  I do a lot of work in the inner city and I see the drug trade’s effects up close and personal.  Will making drugs legal change that?  NO WAY… legalizing them will only shut down the only economy that exists in some neighborgoods.  What will that cause you ask?  Lots of people with out “work” or means of income..what does that lead to? more violence and crime.  What we need is a different way of going about it.

but your logic is flawed…just because some one in academia has ideas and thoughts doesnt make them correct

also just bc a campaign of any sort is not succeeding as intended doesnt make it “unjust” it just means we need to re think the paradigm.  I think that until you see people who have suffered from drug use, and I mean really suffered, that you wont understand.  For you, as I’m sure for many, drugs exist in a world that is just recreation.  We are white and have substantial privilege and sometimes can just use these things recreationally.  This is not the case for most people who use hard drugs.  For them it destroys lives and tears apart families…not because the are banned..but because of how hardcore drug abusers live.  Do we need a better way of handling it…yes.  But your argument is inaccurate

Ugh. I really don’t feel like telling you how wrong you are. I have homework to do, and fighting with someone on the internet about opinions isn’t really going to solve much.

Just know:

Privatized prisons are one of the highest grossing industries in America.

45% of drug offenders are sent to jail for nonviolent marijuana possession related charges.

Drugs came into my life at the age of 2-years-old, and I guarantee it was not “recreational” related. I understand the life-shattering detriment drugs bring to the home, but the majority of my and other family’s drug problem is directly correlated to the fact that these sick people cannot get the medical attention they need without being subject to ruining their lives forever through imprisonment, thus perpetuating their desperation.

I’m not saying the casualties of the drug war are 100% to blame on authorities, but the policies in place and the way in which they are enacted does nothing to help these people.
